Course Outline:
This webinar explores internal derangement of the articular disk within the temporomandibular joint AND dysfunction in the muscles that surround and support the mandible, as well as how these issues can (and often do) overlap. This webinar also reviews the anatomy of the joint and discuss how the various anatomical structures contribute to specific symptoms such as ear pain, pain behind the eye, headaches, jaw pain, neck pain, popping/clicking and catching or actual locking of the joint. Diagnosis is broken down into a Specific treatment of these various symptoms are also reviewed as well as which patients experience this most commonly and why. Relation of TMJ disorders/TMD to tongue tie, 4 bicuspid extraction/retraction orthodontia, and sleep apnea will also be discussed.

 

Objectives:

  1. Know which questions to ask and which signs/symptoms to look for to be able to discriminate between muscles and joint pathologies.
  2. Understand how to diagnose TMJ/TMD correctly.
  3. Understand what’s happening in the muscles/joints to cause specific symptoms
  4. Understand connection of TMJ disorders to sleep apnea, bite, and tongue tie
  5. Know which cases to treat and which to refer

 

Priya Mistry, DDS

About the Speaker

Dr. Priya Mistry graduated with honors from University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in 2007 and has been helping her patients smile with comfort and confidence since then.

Since meeting her mentor (Dr. Arthur L Parker) in 2018, Dr. Mistry has focused on taking care of patients with TMJ/TMD and head & neck pain. She is fortunate to have received 3 years of intensive hands-on training from Dr. Parker – who had been treating patients with TMJ disorders for over 40 years!

Dr. Mistry has received Diplomate status from the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine, making her one of the few providers in the area who is qualified to effectively treat Sleep Apnea with Oral Appliance Therapy. Additionally, she is certified and has received her Fellowship in Disclusion Time Reduction (DTR) Therapy.With all her training, Dr. Mistry celebrates an over 90% success rate treating TMJ/TMD – including Disc Displacement With Reduction.
